A Legacy in Timber and Sustainability
Blamphayne Sawmills is more than a timber supplier - we are a family business with a history steeped in tradition, innovation, and environmental responsibility. From our roots in East Devon to our role as a trusted name in timber products, Blamphayne’s journey is a testament to our craftsmanship, adaptability, and community focus.
For over seven decades, we have been shaping timber into products that blend functionality with craftsmanship, serving customers across the South West and beyond. But our story didn’t begin with the thriving business you see today. To truly appreciate our journey, we’ve created a history timeline that celebrates the hard work, innovation, and family values that shaped who we are today.
1945: The Early Days on the Farm
In 1945, the family behind Blamphayne Sawmills moved from Somerset to a farm in East Devon. The farm was a hive of activity, producing dairy, cheese, eggs, and cider while also managing livestock. This strong agricultural foundation instilled a work ethic and resourcefulness that would later drive the growth of the sawmill business.

1976: Adapting to Change with Dutch Elm Disease
The reappearance of Dutch elm disease in the 1960s and 1970s reshaped the British countryside, and Blamphayne’s future. A bandsaw was purchased to cut down affected elm trees, turning diseased timber into usable wood. This pivot from farming to timber production marked the beginning of Blamphayne Sawmills.
Fun Fact: Dutch elm disease is caused by a fungal pathogen spread by elm bark beetles. It devastated millions of trees in the UK, creating both challenges and opportunities for timber producers.
1978–1986: Building a Reputation in Timber
By the late 1970s, Blamphayne had started delivering timber products to local clients, quickly gaining a reputation for quality. This growth allowed the business to expand into new markets, producing entrance gates and stables. Longstanding partnerships with companies like Mole Valley Farmers were established during this period, laying the groundwork for decades of success.
1995–2006: Focused Growth and Innovation
In 1995, Blamphayne became a limited company, formalising its operations and securing its place in the timber industry. Two years later, the family sold their farm to focus exclusively on the sawmill business, transforming the original site into a hub for timber production.
The move to a purpose-built facility in Honiton in 2006 was a game-changer. Located just off the A30, the new site provided improved capacity and efficiency, enabling the business to meet growing demand.
2009–2018: Sustainability at the Heart of the Business
Sustainability became a core focus in 2009 with the achievement of FSC Certification, demonstrating Blamphayne’s commitment to responsible timber sourcing. Also, investments in eco-friendly technologies, such as biomass boilers and solar panels, ensured that environmental responsibility was embedded in our daily operations.
In 2018, Blamphayne further strengthened its ties to the local community by adding business units to the Honiton site. These units provide opportunities for local entrepreneurs and independent businesses, creating a positive impact on the community's economy.
